Largest gift in St. Johns history will establish the Stanley H. Lucas Endowed Chair in Urology advance prostate cancer research and care at the Santa Monica facility.
SANTA MONICA - Providence Saint John's Health Center has announced the largest philanthropic gift in its history - a transformative estate gift estimated at $100 million from the late Stan Lucas, a longtime friend, donor, and grateful patient of the hospital.
The extraordinary donation, which names Saint John's Health Center Foundation as a primary beneficiary of Lucas' estate, will primarily advance prostate cancer research and care at the Santa Monica facility. The gift will establish the Stanley H. Lucas Endowed Chair in Urology and support expanded research, early detection, innovative treatments, and comprehensive patient care programs.
Born Stanley Howard Lucas on December 2, 1938, in California's Gold Country, Lucas grew up on a turkey farm in rural Clements where he showed more interest in comic books, toy trains, and vintage machinery than in farm chores. By his teens, he was already driving a 1920 Dodge to school and cultivating a lifelong passion for antique vehicles. After earning a degree in mechanical engineering from UC Berkeley in 1962, he traveled internationally, worked in defense and academia, but ultimately thrived as a serial entrepreneur.
Lucas built a diverse business empire that included manufacturing, real estate development, golf enterprises, and antique retail. He took special pride in Lucas Automotive Engineering, the company he founded in 1957, which produced parts for Ford and became a global leader in manufacturing hard-to-find tires for antique and classic cars. An avid collector, Stan assembled an extraordinary array of steam-powered vehicles, vintage automobiles (including prize-winning entries at Pebble Beach), planes, trains, and more. He lived in Venice and passed away peacefully on January 11, 2025, at age 86, surrounded by his chosen family.
"Preceded in death by his parents Leslie and Amy Lucas and siblings Raymond and Linda, Stan left behind a legacy defined by ingenuity, persistence, and deep gratitude for the care he received during his battle with prostate cancer. His generous estate gift ensures that his personal journey will fuel medical progress for countless others" said the hospital in a press release.
This landmark contribution underscores Providence Saint John's vital role in Santa Monica's healthcare landscape and its commitment to advancing medical innovation on the Westside. Hospital leadership expressed profound thanks for Lucas' vision and generosity, calling it the purest form of philanthropy.
Lucas, who received care at Saint John's, was inspired by his personal experience to make a lasting impact. "This historic investment reflects the deep gratitude of a philanthropist whose relationship with Saint John's spanned many years," hospital representatives noted in the announcement.
The funds are expected to significantly strengthen the hospital's urology and cancer programs, including potential endowed positions and expanded research initiatives focused on reshaping how prostate cancer is detected, studied, and treated.
This landmark gift comes as Providence Saint John's continues to earn recognition for clinical excellence in the region. The donation underscores the hospital's vital role in Santa Monica's healthcare landscape and its commitment to advancing medical innovation on the Westside.
Hospital leadership expressed profound thanks for Lucas' vision and generosity. The gift represents not only the largest single contribution in Saint John's history but also a powerful example of how personal gratitude can fuel community-wide medical progress.
