Santa Monica - A pedestrian was killed Friday afternoon after being struck by a westbound Metro Line 33 bus in Santa Monica, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m. near the intersection of Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard, close to the Santa Monica Pier area. Santa Monica police responded to the scene where the woman was pronounced dead.

According to a statement from LA Metro: "A westbound Metro 33 Line Bus, pulling away from the bus stop at Main Street and Ocean Park Boulevard in Santa Monica, made contact with a pedestrian, resulting in a fatality." Preliminary information indicated the pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.

Main Street was closed in both directions between Ocean Park Boulevard and Hollister Avenue as investigators worked at the scene. Traffic on westbound Ocean Park Boulevard approaching Main Street was also impacted. The road closures were later lifted.

The Santa Monica Police Department is leading the investigation into the circumstances of the collision. No identification of the victim has been publicly released as of Saturday morning. Metro has expressed condolences to the woman's family and friends and is cooperating with police.

This is the latest in a series of pedestrian incidents in the Los Angeles area. Officials continue to urge caution around bus stops and when crossing streets, particularly in busy coastal and tourist corridors like those near the Santa Monica Pier. Social media posts said the event was a suicide, with a homeless woman deliberately lying under the wheels of the bus; authorities did not confirm this account.

The Santa Monica Observer will provide updates as more information becomes available from police and Metro.
