This is not Pelosi's first legal issue involving driving in Napa County. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI charges
YOUNTVILLE, Calif. - Paul Pelosi, 86, the husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has been charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run following a July 3 collision in Napa County's wine country.
According to the Napa County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. on July 3rd on Yount Street in Yountville when Pelosi, driving a brown convertible, struck a legally parked, unoccupied vehicle. A witness reported that the driver briefly stopped before continuing on. The parked car sustained major rear-end damage.
Deputies located Pelosi a short distance away on Yountville Cross Road, where his vehicle was partially blocking the roadway with significant front-end damage. Pelosi told investigators he knew he had hit something but was unsure what it was and continued driving until his car became disabled. No injuries were reported, and preliminary testing showed no alcohol in his system.
On July 17, the Napa County District Attorney's Office filed a misdemeanor charge against Pelosi for leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, along with an infraction for making an unlawful turn. His first court appearance is scheduled for August 14 in Napa County Superior Court.
A spokesperson for the Pelosi family stated that Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the damaged vehicle and assured them he would take responsibility for the repairs. Nancy Pelosi's office declined further comment, describing the matter as private.
This is not Pelosi's first legal issue involving driving in Napa County. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor DUI charges stemming from a separate incident and was sentenced to five days in jail (of which he served effectively one day via a work program) and three years of probation.
The case has drawn attention to driving safety considerations for elderly motorists. Authorities have referred Pelosi to the California Department of Motor Vehicles for a routine re-evaluation of his driving privileges, a standard procedure in incidents involving senior drivers.
No additional updates were available as of press time. The Santa Monica Observer will continue to monitor developments in this ongoing case. Napa is across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, which Pelosi still represents in Congress.
