The first thing I noticed wasn't your typical hotel room, it was a large "living" room. We checked into the brand-new Element by Marriott San Diego Mission Valley expecting a standard hotel suite, and instead found ourselves standing on the top floor of the hotel in a fully private, but shareable space with a living room, a dining table, and a full kitchen. Four separate bedroom doors could branch off it, each with its own bed/bathroom configuration, and one main door out in the hallway that could close the whole thing off from the rest of the floor to make it completely private. It's called a Commons, and it's the kind of layout that makes you rethink what a group trip could look like.

Life in the "Commons" Suite
Four separate bedrooms means everyone still gets their privacy.
Element only has two of these Commons units, one on the sixth floor, one on the seventh, but they solve a real problem. Anyone who's tried to book a family reunion, a bachelor or bachelorette party, or a multigenerational trip knows the usual options: a block of separate rooms down a hallway, or one cramped suite everyone trips over each other in. The Commons splits the difference. You get a genuinely shared space to cook, eat, and hang out together during the day, then one, two, three or four private bedrooms to retreat to at night, all sealed off behind one door so it functions like your own floor of the hotel. You decide how many rooms your party will need and everyone in your group gets a bedroom and shares "the Commons." It's a niche booking, sure, but for the right group, it might be the best reason to choose this hotel over anywhere else in Mission Valley.

Most travelers, of course, will be booking a standard room rather than one of the two Commons, and the good news is those hold up well too.
The Rest of the Hotel: Location and Rooms
The location does a lot of the heavy lifting before you've even unpacked. Snapdragon Stadium is a three-minute drive away, Fashion Valley Mall is barely farther, and Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo are reachable in 10 to 15 minutes. For anyone without a car, the Rio Vista Trolley Station on the MTS Green Line is a short walk from the property, making it easy to reach downtown or SDSU without a rental car.
Of the hotel's 148 rooms, the majority are suites, and most come with a fully equipped kitchen, including a stove, microwave, and toaster. It's worth noting this isn't a strictly all-suite property, though: there are also standard king and double queen rooms without kitchens, so if cooking in-room matters, confirm you're booking a suite or studio. Westin Heavenly Beds and spa-style rain showers add a touch of comfort, and 55-inch smart TVs with streaming make it easy to settle in and feel at home.
An Eco-Conscious, Wellness-Minded Stay
As an Element property, the hotel leans into Marriott's eco-conscious brand identity, and it shows in small, practical ways rather than gimmicks. We loved the efficient design, a layout built around natural light, and amenities aimed at people who want to stay active rather than sedentary. Complimentary bike rentals make it easy to explore the paths along the San Diego River, and the hotel's fitness center is sized for more than a quick treadmill session. A free daily breakfast, served each morning from 6:30 to 9:30, takes one more logistical headache off the table. You could also make any of your meals in the room and the Commons provides ample seating options for your group. We counted 24 places to sit and two TV viewing options so everyone wins. .
The Sister-Hotel Perk
Here's the detail that elevates the whole stay: Element shares its property with a full-service Marriott next door, close enough that you can walk straight out the door, across a small shared parking area, and be at the neighboring hotel's pool. That access opens up a restaurant, a bar, and a proper resort-style pool with loungers. These are all amenities an extended-stay property wouldn't typically offer on its own. It's the best of both worlds: the space and self-sufficiency of an extended-stay suite, paired with the dining and pool scene of a full-service resort, without leaving the block.

Built for Groups, Events, and Remote Work
The hotel clearly has more than leisure travelers in mind. There's over 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space, anchored by a 5,300-square-foot ballroom, which positions the property well for weddings, conferences, and the steady flow of events that come with a stadium practically next door. The lobby is designed with remote workers in mind too, with the kind of open, laptop-friendly layout that's become table stakes for business travelers looking to get a few hours of work in before heading out for the day. There is an amazing gym in the hotel and another one in the sister Marriott. Did we mention all the snacks available?

The Takeaway
Element by Marriott San Diego Mission Valley fills a real gap in the neighborhood: a new, well-located hotel built for people who need more than a bed for the night. For most guests, that means a solid extended-stay suite, a pool next door, and easy access to the stadium and the trolley. But for the right group, whether a big family, a wedding party, a bachelor or bachelorette crew, those two Commons suites are the kind of find that makes a trip. Ask for one when you book, because with only two in the whole hotel, they won't stay a secret for long. Did we mention at the time of this article, it's only one month old, so everything in the hotel is shiny and new! The hotel staff is amazing and very excited about welcoming your party to their property.
