Golden Retriever Greets San Diego Burglar With Toys Instead of Teeth and Barks

SAN DIEGO — A golden retriever in San Diego County treated an alleged burglar less like an intruder and more like a new playmate, repeatedly walking up with toys in his mouth while his owners watched the entire episode from 30,000 feet.

Dante Rowley and his fiancée, Stephanie Calderon, were on a flight home from Chicago last week when their Ring app showed a man hopping the fence at their Sherman Heights home, retrieving a ladder from behind the shed, and climbing through a cracked second-story window.

Inside was Nash, their 4-year-old golden retriever. Instead of barking or blocking the man, the dog brought him toys again and again, tail wagging, as if inviting a game of fetch. The suspect did not play.

“Nash is not the greatest guard dog,” Rowley later told local stations. “We thought he was going to bark at people, and he did the exact opposite.”

Video from the home cameras shows the man making himself comfortable: removing his shirt and shoes, eating from the refrigerator, and at one point appearing to rest. A second dog left through a dog door. Nash stayed and kept offering toys.

From the plane, Rowley contacted San Diego police and gave officers live access to the Ring cameras. Officers arrived quickly, used a drone to check the interior, and took 57-year-old John Cline into custody on suspicion of first-degree burglary. Some reports also list additional booking charges including vandalism and possession of a controlled substance.

When police entered, Nash greeted them the same way he had greeted the suspect — toy in mouth.

Rowley said the family plans to raise the fence and tighten security. Nash, meanwhile, has become an internet celebrity, with the Ring footage circulating widely.

The episode is a reminder that some dogs interpret every visitor the same way: potential friend, possible game of fetch. In this case, that friendliness did not prevent an arrest. It just made the video unforgettable.
