Eastbound lanes and one westbound lane remain shut between Allenford Avenue and Mandeville Canyon Road as crews work on a leak along the aging Westgate Trunkline that serves Pacific Palisades. Residents are asked to conserve water while repairs continue.
Sunset Boulevard is partially closed west of Allenford Avenue after a water main leak forced Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews to set up a multi-day repair zone in the Brentwood area.
The leak, located at approximately 13316 West Sunset Boulevard on the Westgate Trunkline, was first reported Friday afternoon. By Saturday evening, all eastbound lanes and one westbound lane between Allenford Avenue and Mandeville Canyon Road were closed to accommodate excavation and repair work. The remaining westbound lane has stayed open at times, but officials have advised motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to stay clear of the immediate area and use alternate routes.
LADWP said all customers continue to receive safe drinking water with no full service interruptions so far. However, the utility has activated contingency plans, including a backup water supply installed earlier this year, and confirmed that tanks serving the Palisades are full. Pacific Palisades customers have been asked to conserve water-particularly by turning off automatic irrigation and pool auto-refill systems-to help maintain system pressure while crews work. LADWP is also coordinating with the Los Angeles Fire Department to ensure fire protection remains available.
The affected infrastructure is part of Los Angeles' aging water system. Similar recent breaks, including a major July rupture on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood involving a pipe installed in 1916, have drawn attention to trunk lines that are decades old, with a substantial share exceeding 65 to 100 years. LADWP has not provided a firm completion date, indicating the work will take several days.
Councilmember Traci Park, who represents the Pacific Palisades and surrounding Westside communities in District 11, has posted a video update on the repair. She warned that people who can avoid the stretch of Sunset Boulevard should do so for the next several days while crews address the leaking water mains and complete infrastructure repairs.
Drivers heading through the area are encouraged to plan for delays and check traffic apps or LADWPNews.com for the latest status. Local reporting indicates the closure is expected to continue while the utility finishes isolating the leak, making repairs, and restoring normal pressure and flow.
