MonkeyParking May be Banned from SM

MonkeyParking made headlines in June, when the San Francisco City Attorney sent the tech start-up a letter asking the company to cease operations in the city or face possible litigation.

The app, which allows users to auction off public parking spots to the highest bidder, was violating city and state law, the letter said.

The app company – now based in San Francisco – decided to take MonkeyParking south to traffic-clogged Santa Monica.

Santa Monica might slam the brakes on the venture before the app even enters the city.

After meeting with the company last week, staff is going to recommend an ordinance to City Council that would effectively ban MonkeyParking and apps like it.

The ordinance, which could come before council in a couple weeks, would probably resemble a San Francisco law that bans selling or renting public parking spots or sidewalks.

Record Power Use during L.A.

Heatwave

Los Angeles broke a power record Monday, September 15, as customers amped up their air conditioners to beat high temperatures.

Energy demand peaked at 6,196 megawatts, breaking a record of 6,177 set on Sept. 27, 2010, according to Michelle Vargas, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. That date four years ago was when downtown Los Angeles recorded its hottest temperature ever at 113 degrees.

Temperatures in Los Angeles County got close to record highs with downtown Los Angeles hitting a high of 98 degrees on the 14th, according to Accuweather.

The hottest temperature for that date downtown was 100 degrees in 2012.

The hot weather led some school districts, including Los Angeles Unified School District, to cancel outdoor athletic events and practices.
