A California woman who needs Hysterectomy on an Emergency Basis, Sent Home During Covid-19 Shutdown

"You are not bleeding, hence this is not an emergency. Here's some codeine. Thank you, please go home now and shelter in place like everyone else."

A woman wrote us today that she is suffering from an acute medical problem of the female variety. She needs an obstetrician to perform a hysterectomy on her. It will not wait, she is in great discomfort, she writes. She is told she has 4 fibroids the size of grapefruits, she says.

The woman went to a local emergency room today. "You are not bleeding, hence this is not an emergency. Here's some codeine. Thank you, please go home now and shelter in place like everyone else."

She is insured, but the lockdown and health insurance conditions mean weeks of delay (first you have to see your primary care physician, then a specialist, then a preoperative visit, then surgery sometime this summer). She is ready, willing and able to pay cash for the surgery.

If anyone knows an OB who, in exchange for payment, could perform a hysterectomy during the great California Covid shutdown, please write to the Santa Monica Observer Newspaper. Thank you. Gratuitous photo of jogger turning around on the blocked bike path above.
