Construction Crews Break Ground on New Pedestrian Bridge at Will Rogers State Beach.

At Will Rogers State Beach, work crews pound pilings into the sand, for a new pedestrian foot bridge.

6.23.22: The State of California has broken grounds on a new pedestrian bridge over PCH that connects Will Rogers State Beach with the George Wolfberg Park at Potrero Canyon.

The State budgeted $11 million to build the bridge, and to widen the existing bike path.

Located in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, Will Rogers State beach is owned by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. However, it is managed and maintained by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors, says Wikipedia.

A section just south of the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Entrada Drive is popular within the LGBT community[1] and is therefore considered Los Angeles' unofficial gay beach. This section is often referred to as Ginger Rogers Beach.

The beach is named after actor Will Rogers. In the 1920s, Rogers bought the land and developed a ranch along the coast. He owned 186 acres along the coast in what is now Pacific Palisades. Rogers died in a plane crash in 1935. Then when his widow, Betty, died in 1944, the ranch became a state park.

The George Wolfberg Park at Potrero Canyon was opened to the public December 10, 2022 as a trail park. Public advocacy is still needed to make sure this bridge, needed for safety purposes to keep people from crossing PCH, is fully funded and built. It will then become a park fully connected to the rest of LA via beach bike paths and bicycles will need to be officially included as allowed.
