Instead of a $1,000,000 a year contract with the Arizona Coyotes, Ilya Fedotov will be paid $10,000 a year to scrub the hulls of Russian frigates. Such are the vagaries of war.

Ivan Fedotov was bound for the NHL, reports the English language Moscow Times. Instead, the goalie "has been detained in Russia for dodging the draft and sent to serve in the Arctic, state media reported Sunday."

Fedotov, 25, was detained Friday in St. Petersburg at the request of the military prosecutor's office, according to the city's Fontanka.ru news website.

The military town of Severomorsk, population 50,000, is located on the Kola Peninsula in the Arctic Circle and is the administrative base of the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet. It is not open to foreign visitors.

Ilya Fedotov is a Russian ice hockey left wing who plays for Chaika Nizhny Novgorod of the MHL. He played two games for Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod during the 2020–21 season. He was drafted by the Arizona Coyotes in the 2nd round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft with the 43rd overall pick in the draft, reports Wikipedia.
