Shame on Santa Monica

Our once can-do spirit has been replaced with a seemingly lethargic acceptance of this mess.

If you have walked our iconic bluffs overlooking the ocean, you will find discarded cans, old backpacks, blankets and clothes on the other side of the concrete railings that spoil the otherwise majestic ocean view.

While the rest of Palisades Park is kept up beautifully, the bluff's rim is riddled with trash. I asked a Parks employee about it and he said they weren't allowed to go over the fence to clean it up because it was too dangerous.

So that's it? Are we out of ideas on how to safely remove that blight before the summer visitors see this and tell their friends back home that Santa Monica isn't what it used to be?

Couldn't those who work there attach a line around themselves and a tree, much like window washers on high rises use safety lines in case they fall?

Our once can-do spirit has been replaced with a seemingly lethargic acceptance of this mess. Meanwhile, our tax dollars to keep our signature tourist attraction pristine languish unused as the bluff's beauty continues to degrade.

I believe that part of the bluff is not under the control of the City but rather CalTrans – that’s what the new City Manager claims. Perhaps the State needs to be contacted about the cleanup of that part of the bluff. I heard it’s very difficult to get CalTrans to come out…
