Garbage Dump Burns in Qaqortoq, Greenland; No one injured

Fire extinguished by helicopter in remote Arctic town

8/19: A garbage dump caught fire in Qaqortog, Greenland Saturday. The fire was extinguished by helicopter. Greenland is wet and cold and fires outside of settlements are rare, though not unheard of. No one was injured in the blaze.

The remote Arctic country, part of the Danish Realm has a total population of 50,000 in an area about a third the size of the United States.

Qaqortoq, formerly Julianehåb, is a city in the Kujalleq municipality in southern Greenland, located near Cape Thorvaldsen. With a population of 3,050 in 2020, it is the most populous town and the municipal capital in southern Greenland and the fourth or fifth-largest town on the island.
