Sexual Misconduct Allegations Emerge Against Senior Organizer on Greta Thunberg's Gaza-Bound Freedom Flotilla

Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, 39, on the steering committee for the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, denies accusations that he engaged in sexual relations with at least three female volunteers

A pro-Palestinian aid flotilla aiming to reach Gaza, which has featured Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg in past voyages, is facing internal controversy over allegations of sexual misconduct against one of its senior organizers.

Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, 39, a member of the steering committee for the Global Sumud Flotilla (also referred to as the Gaza Freedom Flotilla), has been accused by critics of engaging in sexual relations with at least three female volunteers aboard one of the vessels during a humanitarian mission. The claims were first highlighted by the Palestinian solidarity group Heart of Falastin, which described the alleged behavior as "a clear violation of ethics and power," citing concerns over power dynamics between a senior leader and volunteers under his authority on a boat heading to Gaza.

A separate Brazilian group, Anti Esquerda Esquerda Club, publicly identified Ávila in a social media post, criticizing his involvement in the mission while noting his participation in prior flotillas that were intercepted by Israeli forces.

Ávila has strongly denied the allegations, describing them as a fabricated smear campaign. In statements to media outlets including the New York Post, he said the flotilla's independent Ethics Committee investigated the claims-which reportedly surfaced as rumors in November-and spoke with the three individuals mentioned. According to Ávila, they confirmed no misconduct occurred and characterized the accusations as politically motivated. A spokesperson for the flotilla has similarly stated that the internal review found no evidence of wrongdoing or formal complaints.

Ávila, who has participated in multiple previous Gaza flotilla attempts-including voyages in 2025 that were intercepted by Israel, leading to his detention-left his wife and young daughter in Brazil to join the missions. He has been vocal in condemning Israel's blockade of Gaza and has appeared alongside Thunberg in photos and events related to the efforts. Thunberg has been associated with the broader flotilla movement but reportedly stepped down from a steering committee role during an earlier voyage amid internal disagreements, though reports do not directly link that decision to these specific allegations.

The current flotilla departed from Barcelona earlier in April 2026 as part of ongoing civilian efforts to deliver aid and challenge Israel's naval blockade of Gaza. Previous attempts have resulted in interceptions by Israeli authorities, with activists detained and deported.

The allegations have sparked debate online and within activist circles, with some viewing the claims through the lens of power imbalances in high-stress activist environments, while others question the timing and motives behind the reports, suggesting they may be intended to undermine the mission. As of now, no formal legal complaints or independent corroboration beyond the internal review have been publicly detailed. The flotilla organizers maintain focus on their humanitarian objectives amid the controversy.

This incident highlights ongoing challenges within decentralized activist movements, where internal governance and personal conduct can intersect with high-profile political causes.
