He has lived for 100 years and in that time, escaped the Nazis, started a successful textile business, and funded a synagogue in Santa Monica. Mostly, Jack Nomberg is thankful for everything. Nomberg was born in Poland in 1918, the year World War I ended. The battle lines shifted very little in that war, so when the Germans marched into Poland and took Warsaw in 2 weeks, most people were caught flat footed. Nomberg, then 22, went to Siberia, where he survived the war. Later,...

That kids name was Stephen Miller. Even then, he was serious, cerebral, quiet and studied. It was hard for me to take him seriously, he was so serious. I mean, at 16,...

Excerpts of an interview with Sean Goldfaden, a Member at WeWork in Santa Monica, the CEO of CoEfficient Labs. CoEfficient Labs is a Growth Advertising Agency for Series-A Startups. Beginning in September, the City will run a 16 month program to study the feasibility of allowing electric rental scooters on City sidewalks and streets. Bird and Lime companies created controversy by simply renting the scooters on City streets without obtaining any prior permits. Their business plan was that they would get the permits later. Bird paid a $300,000 fine to the City in January, and agreed to distribute 22,500 free helmets to riders. The scooters can travel at...

The City Council is considering amending the municipal code to allow scooters to be parked on City sidewalks. At its June 12th meeting, the Council will consider an amendment to the code. As part of overall mandates, Santa Monica encourages electric and other less polluting transportation alternatives. As a practical matter, many riders who rent scooters from Bird, Lime and other purveyors, leave the vehicles on sidewalks, where the next rider finds them. While the scooters...

Culp: Scott and I have participated in mens groups for many years and that's how we met. This was years before we...

When I'm bored I run on the beach. There's always something new in Santa Monica, and it's usually near the 105 year old Pleasure Pier. DrumDancepray.org had a colorful flag display flapping in the wind. Their website says that their organization is dedicated to curing war, disease, poverty, homelessness and disease, by getting all 195 countries of the world to sit on the beach every night and beat bongos, or something. Ok, fine. Their website actually says their mission is...

Santa Monicans for City Council Term Limits has begun actively circulating a petition to put a charter amendment before voters that would limit city councilmembers to three 4 year terms. "Since this is a charter amendment, we need 15% of the voters in Santa Monica to sign the petition. That's a very high bar, and it's a short deadline," says Nancy Coleman. She added that her petition had been well received by voters she met in front of the Post Office on the 1200 block of...

When you're elected to City Council, it's lifetime position. Herb Katz, Christine Reed, Ken Genser and had to be carried out practically. They all died on the Council. The measure would restrict city leaders to no more than 3 four year terms. With the exception of Ted Winterer, the entire 7...

In contrast to the rest of the country, local weather was a balmy 53 degrees Farenheit in Santa Monica Sunday night as residents and visitors welcomed 2018. Some say that on evenings such as New Years Eve, Uber, Lyft and other ridesharing apps have transformed LA, since people are able to stay out late and drink, then return safely and legally home. The SMPD tweeted: "Whether it is drugs or alcohol, if someone is...

Update 6:40 pm PST: The LA County Sheriff's Dept determined that the "suspicious vehicle" on the Pier did not, in fact, present a threat. However, the Pier remains closed, and authorities are continuing...
