WASHINGTON, DC, July 8 -- Seniors may get robocall relief if a new Federal Communications Commission [FCC] ruling prompts phone companies to implement technologies that automatically block them. Dan Weber, an advocate for older Americans, says the ruling is a step in the right direction. Verizon issued a statement hours after the FCC announced its decision. In it, the company stated that it is "putting robocallers on notice. We've got their number and we're taking big steps...

An earthquake at 10:33 am PST on July 4 was felt from Santa Barbara to San Diego, and as far East as Las Vegas. The temblor went on for over a minute. It was felt throughout the Westside of Los Angeles County as a powerful rolling motion. The quake was centered 12 KM southwest of Searles Valley California. It registered a preliminary magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale, ranking it as probably the biggest southland shock in 20 years, since the 1999 Hector Mines Earthquake...

In what I thought would be a privatized business, ShakeAlertLA, which has been heavily criticized in the last few days, was actually created by the city of Los Angeles and its Mayor, Eric Garcetti. The app which is available on the App Store or Google Play ties into the national ShakeAlert system to inform users on earthquake activity. The recent critiques that ShakeAlertLA has gotten has been in light of the two recent earthquakes in California, the 6.4 on July 4 and the 7.1...

Despite the earthquakes, Santa Monica conducted its annual parade on Thursday July 4, 2019. It lasted from 9:30 to 11 am. The 6.4 Richter scale temblor occurred at 10:19 am. The parade featured more than the usual protests, this is after all the Trump era. One lady had a shirt that said "children in cages." And local peace activist Jerry Rubin was there. The Santa Monica High School marching band was there, as were the usual stilt walkers. The quake did not throw them off...

At 8:19 PM on July 5, 2019 a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the same area, 17 km south west of Ridgecrest California. Given that it's magnitude was greater than the initial shake, this qualifies as the main shark and makes the July 4 earthquake a pre-shock. An event at Burbank high school was evacuated due to the quake. At Caltech, Dr Lucy Jones said she could not remember a series of 3 earthquakes each greater than the one before but it is possible. Later, Caltech said the...

According to Heal the Bay's annual Beach Report Card, the beach at Santa Monica Pier improved its water quality. For the first time since 2013, the Pier missed getting put on Heal the Bay's "Beach Bummer List." The beach at this location did receive a C grade, however, even in dry weather, when bacteria levels are usually lower. Heal the Bay assigns A-F letter grades for 500 California beaches with the grades based on the weekly levels of bacterial pollution found in the...

The Santa Monica City Council approved a nearly $1.6 million budget for 2019-2021 on Tuesday. This is $108 million less than the previous two-year budget, a decrease of 7 percent. While cutting 29 jobs, now vacant, allegedly lowering administrative costs, and trimming some childcare programs, the city will still be funding - or even increasing funding - on some controversial matters. Funding for homeless services will be boosted, despite a distinct lack of evidence that the...

At 6'2" and 170 lbs, stuntman Jacob Tandy is not a guy you want to pick a bar fight with. On January 5, 2018, rising actors Tandy and Zach Chitwood entered into a bar fight in the Santa Monica based event venue and bar, The Victorian. Both Tandy and Chitwood are pursuing acting careers, with Tandy specializing in stunts and Chitwood in modeling. In what seems to be an alcohol induced scuffle, Chitwood got hit over the head with an approximately four inch tall glass by Tandy, r...

East Coast burger-meisters Shake Shack will open a Santa Monica location in the former Panera Bread location at 5th Street and Wilshire Blvd, which is a sigh of relief. At least in this location, Santa Monica will not densify. However, the FedEx open for 24 hours at Sixth Street and Wilshire Blvd, will close forever on September 4th. It will then be demolished for super expensive, ultra luxurious apartments built by NMS. NMS will construct 40 apartments in a four story mixed...
