  • If Caster Semenya Is Female, Then So Is Bruce Jenner

    George Hofstetter, Observer Staff|Updated Aug 19, 2016

Those who know me know that I am not afraid to say the emperor has no clothes, there is an elephant in the room, and it's time to call a spade a spade. Whatever Intersex athlete Caster Semenya's True story maybe, it is unfair to make other women compete against her in events such as the Olympic 800 meters. First of all why do we have separate athletic events for men and women anyway? It's because of the presence of testosterone lands on advantage to men in building muscle...

  • LA Times "Misguided Tirade" Against the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department

George Hofstetter, Assn for LA Deputy Sheriffs|Updated Aug 14, 2016

One has to wonder whether the adults in charge of the LA Times Editorial Board were part of the recent mass exodus from the Times. The question is raised because of a most recent rambling editorial concerning the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, demonstrating yet again the Times antipathy towards law enforcement. In an editorial ostensibly concerning a delay in the Board of Supervisor's implementation of a "Civilian Oversight Commission", the Times took a bizarre turn and...

  • Is bicycle theft rampant in Santa Monica and why?

Gerard Healy, Santa Monica resident|Updated Aug 11, 2016
    3

Dear Editor, I had my bike stolen yesterday from the 17th Street Metro Station parking lot's bike rack. I called SMPD and filed a police report on line. I thought it would be interesting to see how prevalent bike theft is in Santa Monica. In 2014, there were 400+ bike thefts. In 2015, there were about 580 bike thefts. Rounding and not being too precise, it looks like a 30% increase in bike thefts year over year. I don't know the rate for 2016 but am willing to venture a guess...

  • Liberals Voting for Donald Trump

Liz Miller, Observer Staff Writer|Updated Aug 10, 2016

Across the board and across the aisle, those who understand politics are teaming up to prevent the economic and environmental disaster that would result from a Trump presidency, but one unexpected group of Americans are willing to throw us all under that bus: privileged young liberals. Bernie Bros who won't listen to Bernie. The left's version of the Tea Party. By now we've all accepted the notion that there are some conservatives who genuinely believe that Trump will make...

  • How the Black Lives Matter Movement Became Anti-Israel and Anti-Semitic

Sarah Storkin, Observer Staff Writer|Updated Aug 9, 2016
    2

The Black Lives Matter movement stands to lose potential support from influential Jewish organizations after release of a platform that slanders Israel. The activist movement associated with protests across the nation in support of blacks wrongfully killed by white and white police officers recently released a lengthy platform of principles. Among those, catalogued under "Invest-Divest," is this statement, filled with old and oft-refuted canards against the Jewish state: "The...

  • Supreme Court Not Buying Transgender Bathrooms

Christine Emerson, Observer Staff Writer|Updated Aug 7, 2016
    1

On August 3, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-3 that common sense should prevail when it comes to bathrooms at public schools. The Supreme Court blocked an earlier ruling by a federal appeals court that would have allowed boys to use the girls bathroom and locker rooms if they 'identified' as girls. The original court case was a lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Virginia against the Virginia Gloucester County School Board. The ACLU alleged that under Title IX, a federal law that...

Michael Greer, Santa Monica Resident|Updated Jul 31, 2016
    2

It was another day in the Soviet Socialist Republic of Santa Monica. Another day for the city to steal money from its citizens and another way to control their lives. "Drop everything! As we entered the auditorium, we were handed a booklet authored by National Geographic and NPR. On the cover it said "The scientific evidence is clear: Surface temperatures on Earth...

  • Libertarians "Oppose No Fly No Buy bill and other restrictions without due process"

    Carla Howell, Libertarian Party|Updated Jun 21, 2016

ALEXANDRIA - The Libertarian Party opposes the No Fly List, "no buy" lists, and other such lists where the government infringes on a person's rights without due process of law. In recent years, the federal government has used "the war on terror" as an excuse to encroach on our most fundamental human rights. Warrant-less wiretapping, detaining prisoners for years without trials in Guantanamo Bay, "no fly" lists that are compiled secretly and without due process, and similar...

  • Disney's Dead Boy Deflection.

Christine Peake, Observer Staff Writer|Updated Jun 16, 2016

Instead, the sheriff's department is going to team with Florida's wildlife agency...

Officials at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) recently proposed a major change to the way Medicare pays for advanced cancer medicines. Unfortunately, the changes threaten cancer patients' access to lifesaving care. Many people are familiar with Medicare Part D, which covers prescription drugs that beneficiaries purchase at pharmacies. Part B, however, is less well known. It covers drugs for illnesses such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and immune...

  • Bill on Jerry Brown's Desk will Open Obamacare for Illegals in California

    Christine Emerson|Updated Jun 13, 2016

Thanks to our warmhearted members in the state's legislature, a law is now sitting on Governor Jerry Brown's desk that will open Obamacare Exchanges to the state's large illegal immigrant population. "If liberal Governor Jerry Brown signs the bill into law, California would become the first and only state in the nation to invite illegals to sign up for subsidized healthcare. And, it would tempt other so-called 'socially responsible' states to follow suit," says Dan Weber,...

  • Orlando Shooting. Don't Mention Growing Homophobia Or Gun Control.

Christine Peake, Observer Staff Writer|Updated Jun 12, 2016

Today is yet another sad day in what was a great forward moving country. Orlando is the latest victim in a horrific shooting and yes my social media is receiving comments about ISIS but let us not forget that this radical lunatic 29 year old Omar Mateen was able to get his hands on a weapon of war. Reports that he was known to FBI are again being released? His ex wife is spouting like Amber Heard? His father claims it was triggered by an incident where he saw a gay couple...

In February 2014, various American credit rating agencies downgraded the government's debt to non-investment grade. This has created a crisis for the Island, a US Commonwealth. The crisis has forced Puerto Rico's government to adopt policies that it hopes will reduce costs drastically, increase revenues, and spark economic growth so that it can better fund its debt obligations....

According to Granade, the order is needed because state laws against same-sex marriage remain in effect, and the Alabama Supreme Court issued an order in March 2016 affirming three orders from 2015 that prohibited probate judges from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Judge Granade states...

  • Time to protect ourselves from the 'homeless'

Christine Emerson, Observer Staff Writer|Updated Jun 9, 2016

The murder conviction today for Edric Dashell Gross, 50, an African-American transient found guilty of strangling two Santa Monica women followed a six-year investigation into his guilt - followed by a five-year search for his person. • Kamala Harris, Ted Lieu Stomp First Amendment To Punish Climate Change Deniers

Christine Emerson, Observer Staff Writer|Updated Jun 9, 2016

Our representative to the United States Congress, the well-intentioned if currently off-base Ted Lieu, has joined with another Democrat from San Jose to urge California Attorney General Kamala Harris on in her inappropriate harassment of ExxonMobil. Harris is attempting to find evidence to prosecute ExxonMobil for failing to disclose to the public what the company knew about climate change. Nobody likes oil companies. They are considered "greedy" and "dirty" and their products...

  • Harambe: Tempering the Hatred Within Ourselves

    Sabine Rose|Updated Jun 1, 2016
    2

Whether or not the zoo officials were right to shoot Harambe, given the situation at hand, is a completely different question depending on what level of immediacy one chooses to apply to the circumstances. This level can range from the concrete and limited to the broad and philosophical. Further, the more abstract and long-shot the lens through which we see the event becomes, the less the problem remains attached to this gorilla, this DART team, this boy, this family, or this...
